2022 is bringing the energy!
Twenty days into the new year, and it’s been filled with a lot of voiceover! I’m feeling so much joy heading into this year.
Most of my job is auditioning, and I’ve been doing a lot of it. I love the process though- getting/finding a new project and examining the specs, delivering the performance, editing it down and sending it off with a wish and a prayer. Then onto the next! It’s nonstop and keeps me so motivated. You never know which one will land! I think my favorite this week was an audio drama audition.
On Saturday I had a fun commercial class with Sound On Studio and Tania Possick instructing. We read a fun and energetic Twizzlers commercial and got some great feedback and pointers on our takes. It was fun to get some laughs in with fellow students and practice.
Last week I finished up my dubbing homework assignment with Transperfect and their StudioNEXT program. I’m waiting to hear back on my grade. I had to do 3 assignments. Dubbing some character lines with a voice I created and a script and profile they created, dub a classic cartoon and finally dub a live-action character. It was fun to record over and over until it synced just right to the character’s lips and play-back to see it. It really is a craft to bring the same emotion and energy to the character, and also take into account the portrayal of the actor before you. Especially when it comes to animated character voices!
Which tapped more into a session I had just yesterday with 7HM, which is run by Fannie Brett-Rabault and Maxime Rabault. I had a session with them back in November when I was pretty new to dubbing. This session followed along the same lines as that session, but I was able to get two scenes in. I dubbed for an Italian film and both of my characters were performing dramatic scenes. Fannie was great at directing me to really get into my character, giving me pointers on how to trust your brain will see the words while you watch and take in the character’s emotions and body language. To quote one line that went down in infamy in our session together- “I just got CARRIED AWAY!” Ha! Once I did this act, though, I could really see and feel a difference with my performance! It was so fun to see the scenes play-back after Max edited and synced them in real-time. Fannie and Max are both titans in their industry, so kind and generous with their knowledge and tips and the session left me with such a great feeling of accomplishment. Hoping to work on some dubbing jobs soon!
I began my week by writing down a list of my VO goals for 2022. I tacked the finished product up in my studio so I can see it and act on it daily. I decided to GO BIG, no time like this year. Some of the goals include getting cast in a AAA video game, getting a Starbucks or Netflix commercial, collaborating with 30 new clients and make new actor friends in upcoming workshops and classes. Another is making my character/video game demo, which hopefully should be within the next few months even! I’m off to a good start. Plus cold-emailing is working well and I’ve been in touch with two new clients already. Woot!
What are you feeling excited about this year? I’d love to hear.
