Character Creations & Dubbing Delights

Just checking in on what I’ve been up to! It's was an October full of learning, in many ways.

I was very excited to start my “Character Playbook” classes, of which there are four, at Voice One via Zoom. I’m heading into Week 3 and I’ve already created three characters! They vary in pitch and sound and I can’t wait to finish them up with a full background and some lines to get me into character.

I also got back to some one-on-one coaching with Universal Voice Talent Coach Garnet Williams. This was after my first “Character Playbook” class, so I had established some voices I want to perfect for my approaching Character and Video Game Audio Demo. I’ve got about 6 solid ones and I’m going to wrap up writing up each one’s profile to solidify the character in my “playbook”, aka mind. I was nervous about sorting through this step, but I’ve come out the other side! Trying to get my Cockney accent going as well! So much fun!

I’ve been enjoying doing various voiceover character challenges on my Instagram stories. I have been participating with the “Women in VO” account which has led to some fun reads, as well as Teresa Lim and her video game voiceover challenge. I’ve had a good time with an Aussie accent! Check it out in my new website section “Voiceover Creativity”!

There have also been moments where I need to run my business and future. I got a scam client (research is key!) and also other declined interests- but it’s been a good check in with my values and goals.

Finally, I decided to take a stab at dubbing! Dubbing is where you voiceover foreign language films or videos to English, and infuse acting with a nod to the original character or subject. I bought an on-demand class with Transperfect and their “MediaNext” software, and it has really been neat to work with. It works with a Rhythmo-Band, which scrolls across the screen with picture playing above it, so you can match lip sync with the actors as well as see emotions. I think it will be a great addition to my voiceover skills. It seems to be very popular right now. I also booked a one-on-one training session with a coach who specializes in Rhythmo-Band technique. I’m looking forward to that session and meeting her!

I’m feeling so energized and inspired daily with all of this learning and look forward weekly to new voiceover challenges and opportunities! I’m typing this while sitting in this beautiful autumn feeling California day, as leaves drift from trees and my hummingbirds get some refreshment. Stunning!

What’s your favorite part about fall? What have you been learning?
